field trips
Yes, we do them for our massage therapy program. Chair massage is very popular and a great way to take massage to the community and introduce the students to one aspect of their profession.
VIRGILIO,
What a student sees, they are inclined to emulate that activity. A good field trip can establish longlasting and appropriate work skills that will assist them in the workforce.

I think field trips are great because students actually see and experience how it is like to be actually working in their field of study and this will in turn inspire them to do better in the classroom.
Hi Sarah:
In your institution, are you allowed to "assign" a filed trip, then have the students report on it in some way? If so, how do you prevent a student from "cheating" by describing something without actually doing it?

Hi Karen:
I agree that some exposure to some segment of the career area students are studying for is quite helpful, inspiraing, and motivates students to the degree that some may even begin to put in more effort to do better in class as a result.

Hi Sarah:
I think field trips are very under rated and ought to be mandated for classes because they add so much :-). Few activities can achieve what a well planned field trip can accomplish. Motivating and inspiriting, with the potential to induce students to want to learn more - and that's always a good thing.

A month ago, my anatomy and physiology class went to see a museum exhibit with cadavers and many displays. It was the first field trip I had been responsible for and it was such an amazing experience. I noticed that the students were incorporating topics learned in pathology along with A&P and discussing things among themselves. I was impressed and happy to be their instructor! I really believe that field trips are a great way to make learning exciting, to build teamwork, and to promote discussions between the students and with the instructor.
Hi Tim:
Great way for students to see what they may experience sometime, but mostly, these field trips tend to motivate students.

I currently teach online, so field trips aren't an option. WHen I was a traditional classroom teacher though, field trips were great for my students!
In the automotive class we take field trips to car shows to one give the students a break from the classroom and to show them clasic old school technolgy.
It is customary at the university I teach at to take field trips. We fully believe that interaction in the "real world" opposed to what is taught in a text book enhances their perception of what will be expected of students upon graduation. This also aids in their career focus.
