Why take this Class
One of the first things i addrss in the classroom is why this class is important to the student. I relate the class and topics to the programs students have enrolled in. I feel that students are more interested in learning if they know why they are learning a subject.
Hi Faye:
Great idea - this addresses the "what's in it for me" phenomenon that some educational enthusiasts believe is the key motivating factor for adult learners.

Hi James:
Good answer! Many students find it difficult to see the big picture, of how their current classes relate to the overall profession they're training for.
I think one stategy is to share stories... about the time that....etc. This seems to grab attention, and may help fit a few puzzle peices into place for the students.

Each class is used as a stepping stone for other classes, explaining that to the students may help them to realize that the information that they will receive is not just for the class they arein, but will help them prepare for the classes to follow.
Hi Michelle:
Good! I think teachers sometimes assume that students automatically have an accurate vision for their future career, while in truth part of our job is to convey the significant, exciting, and wonderful aspect the career or profession holds for them. We need to bring the work setting to life! An we can do that a little bit each day.

Yes - I agree that the students must feel the class will benefit them in some way. This gives them a much better attitude about the class and the instructor. When a student feels a class is a "busy work" class they just don't care about it.
Hi George:
You've hit it well - we're really asking why the students would want to care about the class. Relating the material to something they might need in the real world is a very good motivator.

I feel that this is one of the most important steps an instructor can take. You have to help the students understand how the class they are taking will impact them in the chosen career path. I teach basic business and management along with communications at a technical school. It is always a challenge to get the students onboard. Addressing how the students will use the knowledge gained from the course in the field goes along way with achieving success with the students and their learning.
I agree, Faye. As an English Comp instructor, I have the write why they think taking English classes in a Tech/Career oriented college. I also get them to share the responses. As the quarter moves along and they begin to complain about having to write various essays, I take a little time to remind them to think about what they wrote/discussed at the start. This seems to help them refocus on why they are there and the importance of a class like English Comp to someone who is going to school for Medical Assisting.
