Having a "Different" Guest Speaker
I find it best to have a speaker that found their career unexpectedly the best for a career college class. Normally, their story is one with more turns and dips to than expected, and the students react well to that.
Hi Darren:
Another thing thiswould allow is the students would get a fresh perspective from that guest speaker in a way that might re-enliven the information.

Hi Jeff:
I can appreciate and experiend new grad that can bring some work setting stories to the class. I can also say that even a brand new graduate is more experienced than new students who may be able to relate to "one of their own". What the new grad may lack in experience, a good choice can bring enthusiasm and nspiration to good students, and hope and encouragement for struggling students. That can be a meaningful guest speaker experience just as much.

Recent Grads are a great idea as a guest speaker, but they should have a minimum of at least a year in the industry they were trained in.
Hi Tim:
Great! I think recent grads to very well as guest speakers because they're still new enough to still convey passion, enthusiasm and excitement about a job or profession. Plus, they're familar with the school and therefore current students can realte to them as one of their own. What they lack in experience is made up in inpiration!

I like the idea of having someone who has been in the field for a while speak in the beginning of the program and then bring in a recent working graduate of the programs to show the students that there something for them out there after they finish.
Tim
Hi Michael:
Recent grads are so cool... they bring a fresh dimension and are almost always really enthusiastic about their career choice.

On the other hand, I've found it helpful to invite recent graduates in the midst of their job search to speak to my Career Develpment Class. This is especially effective when all students in the class are in the same discipline. Both guests were known to the class. One had just gone through the interview process and had accepted a position. The other had just returned from an out of state interview and was awaiting a decision. Had them go through their entire application process for each position. How they heard about it? What they did next? And how the interview went. Very valuable.
