Field trips and and guest speakers
I like to use field trips and guest speakers to motivate my students. It also helps them to begin networking in the community.

They do inspire and usually prove to be an interesting adventure for students. It's also cool when a speaker reinforces or validates information the instructor has emphasized.

Yes, I agree these activities can greatly beneficial. Just because it's something different is enough to capture attention. But when students see and hear something about their career area, it can motivate them and even get poorer students performing better.

I feel that field trips and guests speakers are a huge asset to teaching.
First guest speakers bring new insight to the students about that particular area of study. It is also helpful to the instructor for up-to-date information as to what the field of study is doing in the outside world.
Field trips generate excitement for the students because they receive hands-on experience in their field of study. Many of my most memorable and beneficial experiences came from field trips. I went back to the classroom excited about what I had seen and ready to learn more.
