Guest speakers
I have found that guest speakers provide
a platform to make a vast amount of real
world knowledge to your students. Be sure
when you choose gust speakers you research
their background to be sure they can provide worthwhile information to your classroom.

Yes, good deal! Guest speakers usually spark interest and can be quite motivating. Plus, they provide additional variety to the class and provide an opportunity for dialog.

My department finds it very rewarding and it generates a great deal of interest and excitment within the classroom to have colloquiums on a regular basis.

Yes, researching a background can be critical. I've only a few, but when preparation and coordination occurs to host a guest speaker and s/he turns out "flat" or uninteresting, its almost wors than than being unprepared myself. One help I've used is to clue the speaker in about the current subject matter and/or ask that they cover "XYZ" topics. That way, at least it won't be a disappointment for the students.
