Understanding Yourself

I found this particularly interesting as it relates to my teaching for one particular reason. As a Chef I have to slightly adjust "Who I am" when I am teaching compared to when I am leading a kitchen. I found out pretty quickly that students really start to balk if you try to be their "Boss" instead of the mentor.

This has meant learning a little bit about myself and also, measuring my responses before giving them.

You bring up a good observation in education, something I have been wrestling with lately. It seems I am a bit of a "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde," meaning my energy and enthusiasm is on overload when I am in the classroom, but catch me at my cubicle and I am blah. Not sure if this is really personality driven or nervousness in front of students that opens up my senses. Regardless, I realize the difference in my personality and it might be time to take a personality test?

Ian,
I know waht you mean. I want to be natural and myself, yet there is a "myself as teacher" that's just as authentic as the "myself as grandpa", etc.

Carolyn,
I've taken dozen's of these tests and for me. The results are interesting, and I have found them helpful. I'm sure they could be helpful to anyone who want to improve themselves. They usually point out what I already know. However, sometimes the accompanying guides on how to deal with the information has been extremely helpful.

Taking a personality assessment definitely helps with understanding your strengths and weaknesses as a teacher. I discovered that while I make a good college teachers (strengths theoretical and logical) in a high school I would always have to watch my teaching level.
