Field Trips

Field trips are important. You can know your students more closely and they can prepare worksheets on things ,the instructor wants them to focus on.

Debbie,
It seems there is almost always a change with many of the student that occurs after a good field trip. It may be that for some, they are getting their first "look" at the work they will be ultimately doing. In most cases, all students get a lttle bit jazzed about their bclass work, which motivates some to do better and buckle down (if they haven't been previously). That's always a good thing.

Iagree field trips are a very educational and "fun" for everyone. Getting to watch the students recations and hear their veberal comments are wonderfull. Helps to keep everyone excitied.

Gretchen,
Yes. Students seem to enjoy field trips. It’s something different. But more importantly, students are often surprised at what a relatively simple planning activity such as a field trip can do to motivate and inspire.

Field trips give another setting outside of school where the students can learn a different way to do things; it also gives them a chance to see a specialized skill that they are interested.

Wes,
Understandably so. One thing a teacher in a fast-paced, accelerated program can do is keep in contact with graduates who may be willing to share names or network on you behalf. Even as guest speakers, what they lack in experience is often made up in familiarity with the program, being approachable by current students, and most of all, usually very enthusiastic.

Field trips are outstanding in a more open cirricumlum. However, in today's more structured and accelerated career colleges they are very difficult to offer. This is one aspect of "long" semesters that I miss in teaching.

Laxmi,
Oftyen times the classroom and lab is just not adequate to convey some aspect of the profession the students are preparing for. The field trip can serve as an "eye-opening" experience for many, also giving the opportunity to ask questions, and see first hand what they may soon be doing themselves.
