"We’ve got one chance to make a good first impression". Organization leads to better prepared classes, students notice this,as instructors we are more thorough and creative because our thoughts are organized. When we're prepared it just adds to a more interesting class. The hurried, frazzled, hectic-pace teacher conveys less than a wonderful picture of competence and confidence. Students are paying attention to the instructors every move, so organization comveys competence.
I make it a rule to always be 3-5 days ahead of schedule, organized and prepared for the future start of a class.
Diane,
I know when I'm organized, classes run smoother. I feel more in control but also more able to explore the dynmaics of student interaction. Students feel that too.

I agree. Being organized and prepared should not mean being rigid and unable to take advantage of spontaneous discussions that support student learning. Flexibility is friend of presentations that keep students interested.
Tracy,
Students need (and want) organization and direction. They may feel independent but they desire clear directions, understanding of expectations, and clarity in their lessons. Keeping class organized usually provides this.

I think being prepared and organized helps me with my class because I know were I may need to add additional instruction on something or if I'm able to move on to the next project faster. Also I write on the board each day what we will be doing so by being organized and planning ahead it allows me to do this.
Marilyn,
When I am full ready for a class, I just feel more upbeat, willing to take on questions, and feel my energy is "supersized" for interacting with my students. My desire is to have every day like that.

I too think organization leads to better prepared classes. When the instructor is well organized in his/her presentation, it conveys a sense of confidence which is a positive model for students.
Joe,
Right. A discussion could include an "opinion" component, for instance, and to the student, they are right, where the teacher may have no opinion, a different opinion, or an alternative point of view to share with the student and/or class.
Barry Westling
I could not agree more. I would never want to be in a situation where I am the least bit unprepared. However, I also believe that leaving some class time to open forum discussion is important. I believe some instructors confuse being organized with dominating every single minute of the class. As confident instructors we must be willing to open up a discussion even if we are not complete experts on the particular question asked.
Mary,
I think you'
ve a good handle on the importance of readiness and I'm sure your students feel fortunate to have a teacher who is aware of the important traits that add to their educational pursuits.
