I do scavenger hunts in some of my regular sites too. This helps make sure the areas I want the students to be familiar with are covered. Most of my better field trips are locations that we have been invited to to learn about some segment of operation that has some value to our program of study. Students like field trips.

This sounds like a great variation to the standard "stand, listen, and walk" acitivity many field trips provide. Like any other learning activity, the more involvment we can create for our students, the better retention of information will occur.
