I find that if you are early for class and have everything you need prior to class, then the students are more relaxed. And to them it seems that you know what you are doing and teaching.

Yes, and the ability to ask questions, clarify information, or just chat about class or current events is much more likely if we are there when the students arrive, and aren't busily scurrying about getting ready.
