Instructor Teaching Styles

I wonder how many of us educators can honestly see ourselves in one or more of the categories as stated in the beginning of the information provided?

I can personally see myself in more than one category. But I realize it is a generalized overview of teaching styles.

Which category do you see your self in?

How can you change and adapt your style to become a more effective teacher?

What can you sustain and maintain about your style that works?

Donald,
Teaching is an an art and a science. I believe the art of instructing involves a persona that conveys competence and confidence.

When I reflected on the educators that most stimulated the classroom experience for me, their style was a reflection of their personality

Stephen Dable,
It is important to be able to "strike while the iron's hot", so to speak. Students do have moments where they are more or less motivated, active, energized, and willing to open up to instruction. Knowing when this is can work to the instructors benefit, if they are aware of particular "high and low" times. I also think passion and enthusiasm by the instructor help bring any class to higher levels.

You need to be ready to teach when a students is ready to learn. As a teacher it is our job to create or look for those moments of readiness learning. For examp,e as a debate coach, the two moments of crisis learning are just before a competition and just after a competition. I can accomplish more in those two time periods than a week in class.

That moment of learning readiness may come before class, after class, office hours, a spark that is ignited in a class discussion. Recognize the moment and teach like a mad man.

Brian,
When we determine to be the best instructors we can be, by necessity, that is going to involve improvement, adjustment, and that awful word..."change". But the result is we get better, and our students benefit from that.

Self Improvement in the classroom is always improving and things are always changing, if you were to take my class 5 years ago, it would be a drastically different experiece, in a good way :)

Brian,
As I have commented on different posts, I believe instructors who recognize they will always benefit from self improvement, those willing to seek out ways and methods to improve their classes, make them more interesting and enjoyable, and increase their students learning will always be more satisfied and get more from their work. Good for you.

When I observed all those different teaching styles I could relate to a lot of them in many ways. Seeing them all personally helps me confirm with areas that I have seen grow over the years while gaining more experience as a teacher. I am always searching to find more effective ways to allow the student to consume the most out of each lecture/project. Every module I add new content to the mod, but my Program is Graphic Design which is constantly evolving and changing.

Mike,
We all are who we are, and we bring our personalities, expertise, knowledge, and particular style, which probably is a blend of multiple styles described. I think in general, being genuine, sincere, and authentic in our presentation, affect, and interaction with students creates the best possible instructional style.
