HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR CLASS
IT IS COMBINATION OF BOOKS,EXPERIENCE AND ONLINE SOURCES.YOU HAVE TO USE VIDEO CLIPS AND REAL TIME SOURCES SO STUDENTS PAY MORE ATTENTION.
Todd,
Good disection of a learning activity. Instructors do need to be aware of engagement (or lack of) and be ready toi intervene. That can include simple things like just asking a few disengaged students a question or standing next to a student, to more extensive actions, such as a change-up (different activity), group discussion, or even taking a break (as applicable). I do something I call shock-talk, which is sharing a story from my past work that is nearly unbelievable, unusual, or surprising. When I talk about work, students become interested.

I agree, a few videos are good, too many can really hurt the class flow.
It is pretty easy to see if they are effective or not though, just wach your class when you are showing them, if they are watching the video and engaged, it is all good. If they are talking, nodding of, texting, doodling, etc. you have passed the line.
They will let you know very quickly where that line is, and it may be different for different classes. I hve had classes where I showed part of something, one class will be bored by it, and another will ask if we can watch more. Each class kind of has its own personality.
Paul,
This is good. I've found if clips are too long, students can lose interest. Even professionally produced videos that are directly rekated to the subject matter can be too much for some students based on their length. But a good 1-5 minute video clip can do wonders in the middle of a PPT or discussion.

I like to use short video clips to supplement my lectures and demonstrations. This way the students get to hear/see the material presented in a slightly different way giving them a better chance to get it.
I agree Dr. Sam. Having the necessary informationa and resources is very important.
Adrienne,
In a computer class, I would expect there would be a lot of online resources used. Personally, I think short video clips work best, and probably more than a couple viewings per class sessions would begin to get a bit overused. One way to assess this is to look at your course objectives and daily learning objectives, then ask, "to what degree is (are) these video clips contributing to the students understanding and overall usefulness for any specific skills or knowledge they are to possess"? That can help gauge too much, from one perspective anyway.

When do you know you have over utilized the use of the internet examples and youtube videos in the classroom?
amgad,
I agree and think all resources and media that can be integrated into a class session are going to make the course more interesting and satisfying to the students.
