Using a guest speaker can either discourage or motivate a student.

It's always nice when a guest reinforces what the instructor has presented. Adds credibilty. And I think it never hurts to hear material repeatedly.

Yes. It is like an out of town preacher coming to speak at a revival. He may say the same thing that the resident pastor says, but the people listen because he is the "expert."

For me, the value of say, an hour with a highly regarded individual is special and time from regular class activities does not seem unreasonable.

We have a guest speaker coming in next week. He is a highly regarded professional in a very related career field. The problem is that management is expecting us to take class time to accommodation this speaker. We already have a very condensed schedule and it's gonna be hard to make up the time with the same quality of instruction. Do you guys think this is a productive use of class time?

I suppose it's possible, but rarely have I seen a student get discouraged from a guest speaker. Perhaps if a student asked a question about salary or benefits, I might see how a students incorrect expectations might diminish a their enthusiasm.
