I engage the students by using different methods, showing props to hand out, raising and lowering my voice, calling on them to answer a question, walking around the room during discussion.
Hi Louis:
Yeah, in baseball they call that a change up - the bnatter expecting one thing and ball is delivered differently and unexpectedly. To keep things fresh, I think this is a good idea. I also think people generally don't like surprises, especiall when comes to things like their lessons or grading, etc. You have made a good point.

it keeps the students engaged when they don't know your next move, what will he do next? Every day is a performance.
Hi Larry:
It's interesting that people enjoy personal stories. I add them and students always pay attention. We just have to be careful the class is not full of war stories". But a little seasoning here and there adds flavor.

I find that the more I share of my personal experiences, the more meaningful feedback I get from my students.
Hi Trevor:
It's amazing what a little bit of humor can add to an otherwise ordinary class experience. It's sort of like seasoning - it can add just enough flavor to complete the meal with tasty satisfaction.

I also use these methods they are very affective, on top of these I like to through in a funny experience from the feild to break up the mood and reset there attention span also I like to use personal experience the relate to subject material Like some of the crazy things I have seen in the feild.
Hi Rob:
Good use of variety - keeps things interesting, active, focused, and students perhaps more attentive.
