Power Point Presentations

I find Power Point presentations to helpful at certain times, but can can become routine if used to often. They work best when a specific topic requires graphics and special features.

Hi Jeffrey:
I agree with Catherine too. Nobo0dy ever said a PPT had to go from slide to slide witgout some interesting break in the sequence.

Hi Catherine,

I totally agree with your concept of not abusing power points. Putting in a mini quiz is a great idea to keep students on their toes and to actively take notes.

Best wishes,
Jeff J

Hi Shaista:
I agree and tend toi think about PPT as a media that is both wonderful and awful at the same time. It all depends on the material, how it's formatted, the delivery, the volume of material, and the ultimate ability for students to learn what they need from the presentations.

Hi Marla:
With PPT, anything that keeps the students interest and provides needed instruction is probably a good idea. (Has to stay professional, of course!)

If power point presentation are made short & sweet with jsut the main points no the whole book it will definitely help the students to get the main points. Also if they are short students will not loose intrest & also be able to know the areas to focus on. They dont need to be realy fancy but can easily incooperate pictures, vidoes & sounds if related to topic. There is definitely a learning curve with ppt

I agree. I think that having quiz questions throughout the presentation will keep the students attention, and make them want to listen and learn so they can answer the questions. Sometimes, I will have a prize (candy, gum, etc) as rewards for correct answers. The students love this because they fell it is like a game show and will want to win. These minor prizes go a long way when they have 3 hour lectures to listen to.

Hi Allana:
I agree and would say they can be made to be engaging to students. Sometimes, if information is just put before students there's no connection. A key to better PPT slides is to make them interesting, pertinent, easy to read, and perceived as helpful to students.

I agree that Power Points can be repetative, however, if they purtain to the subject along with various class styles and motivation, the Power Points will be engaging to the students.

Hi Catherine:
Your "keep them awake" technique is interesting. They might not always be interested but you'll definetly keep their attention!

To my experience, Power Point presentation must be used but not abused. Some presentation can put the students right to sleep. I find out that if I insert a mini quiz every 5th slides, the students will expect to be questioned and will pay more attention in order to have the right answers.

Hi Troy:
I think you've idenfied one of the most useful purposes for using PPT in a classroom. PPT can be a powerful tool, but also a big time waster (in preparation) for less than stellar results with student learning. Selecting the best media for a given topic takes some thought on the part of the teacher.
