New instructional methods

Use power point and hand outs

Hi Jennifer:

Great idea - when selecting course material and media, it is important to try to employ as many teaching styles as we can in order to address as many learning styles as possible. Selecting material and presenting it in a visual, audio, and kinesthetic way is generally considered the most efficient method of delivery.

In a lecture class (Food Safety and Sanitation) given to a bunch of "hands on learners" (students who are training to be culinarians and bakers) is sometimes very frustrating. They don't want to be there in the first place- and sometimes the content is very dry, so that doesn't help.
So I encourage the students to print out the PP as handouts- so we can run through them faster- and we can get to hands on activities- to help solidify what I just taught- and to help keep them focused. And almost every lesson has somesort of hands on activity/ group activity/ video.

Hi Bruno:
Whenever we can use a mixture of media, the variety will enhance retention of information. Of course, there is some media that is the best for a given topic. But from the student's standpoint, variety will help keep their attention, and focus on the lesson.

I use the same set up as stated above, and is perfect for my format!

Hi Stephen:
Great technique. As the "technological classroom becomes more frequent in use, as teachers, we'll all be challenged to be creative, as you are with your equipment.

Hi Maureen:
This is a graet example of using teamwork, critical thinking, planning, and presentation - in essence, the students teaching the class - tremendously more vaulable as a learning experience that "the teacher lecturing".

Projects involving the participation of students can be very interesting. The instructor can chose the topics to be covered in class.

However, if each student is allowed to draw a topic randomly from a box, do the project by as a groups project (with supervision), after which a discussion platform is held, student will display unexpected qualities.

Often you can find out more about your students and learn how to, or what motivates them. A tool that can enhance your future lesson planning.

I use an overhead project that interfaces with a computer. I can then project Internet websites to the whole class and accomplish exercises or quizzes. Also, we break off into teams, and I have them compete with other teams for a prize for answering the most grammar questions correctly.
