Always speak positive of your career

You should always speak positive of your career. Students that are hesitant or on the fence and ready to give up, are searching for one reason to give up, and any negative feedback may give them what they are looking for..Do you agree?

Hi Trish:
Coming from the medical field myself, I know that even the wiered or negative experiences can be turned around into good "learning expereinces" that can benefit the student.

Hi Regena:
Even strange and negative occurrences from our jobs can be turned into learning experiences, putting a positive spin on the career as a whole.

Hi Maribeth:
Exactly - by keeping it positive, we help keep morale up, thus keeping interest in the topic as high as possible.

With 20 years of experience in the medical field I find that my students appreciate what is going on currently in that venue. It means more to them to take what is taught in the classromm and make it relevant to what they will encounter. There is no "perfect" working environment but if you love what you do and have a passion for it there are always more positive things to say about your career!

I agree with you that speaking positive of your career is essential. I also use my experiences in my field to instill excitement in my students. What I portray is contagious and they begin to interact. They hear "I would not trade my career and it's experiences". Students can tell if you are truthful or not. They seem to have this extra sense of perception.

As an instructor, we are faced with some difficult scenarios. It is our job to be honest with those that have put their trust in us to bring them knowledge, experience and truth. Though I do keep an extremely positive attitude about my career, I also find it equally important to be truthful about the industry. If all we do is "blow smoke" to our students, when they get into the world themselves we may have set them up for failure due to false hopes of the "perfect" job! There is no such thing.

With that said, I am a huge believer in the power of positive thinking. I do believe that we can chose to make the most of even the not so great parts of our career choices!

Absolutely! Being excited about the material demonstrates to the student the longevity they can have in their new chosen career. Changing material delivery can also keep things moving & exciting.

Hi Adelaida:
There's a saying to "only say behind some's back what you'd say to their face". While this has some truth, the realit is sometimes the teacher is going to have have to compare and contrast situations and circumstances that can only be learned and appreciated by calling attention to less wonderful aspects of the profession.

Yet, whn a teacher consisently displays n attitude of hope and optimism, and is enthusiastic and passionate about their topic, it would be hard not to learn the approriate lesson without dwelling on the negative.

I have been in this career for over 30 years and I always speak positively about what I am teaching. I find that the students are interested to hear my experiences in the field and help them decide whether to continue or not.

Hi Kodee:
Imagine waliking into a class and every day, regardless of the topic, the teacher greeted you by name with a smile and asked how you were doing, and if you had any questions.

The daily objectives and outline for the day is on written on the board.

As class begins, the teacher is animated, enthusiastic in delivering the neeeded material. Whenever reference to the profession occurs, there is passion, and excitement, and anticipation, and optimism that accompanies most statements. All comments are redirected or associarted to suucessful career opportunities for students.

I think that class would be fun, interesting and enjoyable, and one I'd look forward to attending and be disappointed if I missed a class.

When I build up my career and the field they are entering it makes students so hopeful and excited it can be a breath of freash air in the classroom

Hi Gail:
Some teachers feel by being realisitic and sharing all that's "wrong" with a work situation will make students stronger. In fact, students can find this kind of information outr on thbeir own, without help. Also, How the teacher "feels" is wrong may be their personal opinion, and really a reality.

Regards, Barry

Speaking positively about the student's career choice is undoubtedly one of the best teaching skills to use. The students need to know that the choice that they have made to enter a certain field are worth the time, effort and expense that they have to put forth. Being a positive person in any genre is better than being a negative one.
