Has anyone incorporated different colors into their teaching? I had a student do a presentation on color therapy and the other students wanted me to start doing their tests on different color papers.
Hi Sandy:
Since most humans learn alot via multiple methods, using color can help those of us who learn and attach visual imagery in our minds when trying to remember ideas about new concepts.

Hi Siane:
Using color, or the other senses in learning is a great way to bring variety to the learning session.

I use color paper all of the time. My students will usually ask if I am stocked up (2 reams per quarter) when it's time to start a new quarter. I do quizzes, tests, the syllabus, THE RULES, project requirements, crosswords and find-a-word, whatever strikes me. I purchase my own supplies so I don't have an issue and I like color. My students think they are special because I am the only one to do this...and they are special.
Hi Laura:
Good point - the use of color can visually help a student make connections with the material they otherwise may not have made.

Hi Elizabeth:
That's important - especially when using a tool like power-point.
There are many strategies out there about making effective presentations to adult learners, and the method you've described is right on.
Another consideration is not having too much information crammed onto the slide.

Hi Robbie:
Color, other sounds, other visuals, getting the student up and walking around, etc. - all of which are terrific examples of utilizing more than just one technique to impart the learning to the student.
Doing so keeps the learning environment more robust and interesting.

Hi Colleen:
I think your bringing up a good point that I'll paraphrase and call "different teaching methods".
Color is one great example. How about other types of sounds? Pictures? Activities? This discussion illustrates that there are many methods instructors can use to impart information that doesn't have to be a lecture.

I like color… used in splashes. I like to have each course delineated by the colors “splashes†. I find that this helps students keep the course papers separate. I also like the use of graphics, just to ad interest.
i have used different color dry erase markers to keep the students attention when writing on the board
When my class do the flow of the heart i use two colors red and blue for the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. They also learn the flow heart and when its time to change the blood lw
we use color in our powerpoints, and I advise my students to use color with study guides and quizzes, it has been proven that the mind sees it as new information, since old and new are stored in the same place in the brain
I try to incorporate color into my presentations to really make important points stand out. I do find that I have to be a little careful, however. I went a little overboard with the colors one time and found it distracting. :)
Hi Nicola:
Color is a powerful sense - it stimulates and helps memory. Use it whenever it's applicable or possible.

For exams I think it's important to use white paper- since it's easier to read photocopies on white.
That said, color is really useful in powerpoints (key terms are in red etc).
