useing powerpoint

know every slide and read BETWEEN the lines.

Hi Steve:

If using PPT, one general, all-purpose guideline to remember about using power-point is this – don’t read the slides to the students. Unless you’re deliberately trying to make a point, reading slides is the quickest way to have students tune out during the lesson.

Instead, it’s better to cover the main points on the slide, and have the students refer to the notes on their own.

When I use a powerpoint I use it to keep me on track, so that I don't forget valid information. I do alot of talking in between slides about the main point on each slide. Keeps the students more in tune. Don't lose as many students this way.

I have found that the more methods of presentation you use, the more effective the instruction will be. If you cater to the 4 different learning styles, then you should be able to teach to everyone in the class. I like PPT for that reason because you can go visual, and auditory in one depending on what you put in the slide show.

Hi Mary:
By having the students write questions out in the way you describe, it uses different types of thinking - visual and kinesthetic learning is considered to be one of the most effective methods of teaching.

Hi Hanna:
Powerpoints can be an excellent media, if used effectively. For example, most would agree that just reading the information on the slides without additional comments is an ineffective way of presenting information.

Hi Alyson:
To paraphrase what you've described, we ideally should use a variety of approaches, including PP to address every type of learning style.

Hi Danielle:
Poerpoints can be used effectively, but who is to say it is the only method that works?

Much of the time, information can be presented well by any method - visually, audio, or hand on approach.

No matter what, most effective would be to consider using a combination of all of these methods.

Hi John:
Power-points can be an effective method of teaching information, as long as we keep in mind there needs to be balance between the information and ANY presentation style.
Your point of knowing the slides is important, not having them down would suggest the instructor is less than prepared.

I use pp correlating to the chapter that we will be studying the following week.I have the students write questions next to the slide of the material they dont fully understand to be answered in class.I instruct with both the text and the pp as a supplement .The student comments are always positive. I have tried notes but they dont like them as much.

I like to use PowerPoints and use them instead of notes. I put them on the student portal so that the students pay attention and don't copy notes instead of listening.

I love pp I have noticed that some students do well but some dont do very well when i use them so I switch up on the way i present the pp

i can honestly say pp is not for me. even my boss says so. i do much better hands on as well as using the white board to convey the information. is anyone else that way?
