Power Point

I love my power point......could be however that the ole school items can also project here.....simple and clear what ever the media.....less is more now and then....cheers...Chef Dan

Hi Natasha:

One reason why some students may not enjoy power-point is due to the fact that a lot of instructors read the slides to the students.

This approach might be called boring by many. It is considered a better practice to expound on primary key points when using PPT.

Hi Richard:

If using PPT, one general, all-purpose guideline to remember about using power-point is this – don’t read the slides to the students. Unless you’re deliberately trying to make a point, reading slides is the quickest way to have students tune out during the lesson.

Instead, it’s better to cover the main points on the slide, and have the students refer to the notes on their own.

I have asked several of my students thier preference about power point handouts. Most of them want the notes pages so that they don't have to look different places to study. There are still a few student would rather just use their text books. So I give handouts to all of them and they can make their own decisions.

I love using Power Point. The students seem to enjoy it and I try to make it fun. Some of my students have told me it is easier for them to learn with these visuals.

There are some PPT pointers @ http://www.vickiblackwell.com/ppt/index.html worth taking a look at when time allows.

I love using powerpoints for the lecture portion of my classes. I had a fellow instructor suggest that I print out the powepoint for the students in I think its the handouts method with 3 slides per page. This way they have all the information from the presentation plus they have lines next to each slide to write down additional information that we talk about in class.

The ability to have a power point hook up to the internet is a great teaching tool. To be able to look up most recent material about a subject and discuss it with the class is great.

I feel that by using powerpoint I am giving my studetns something to focus their attention on while I speak, I try to incorporate using the PP as well as reading from the book and using specific examples that I have come up with before hand.

Hi Jane:
The 4 tenets work good with many media, PPT among them. The caution with PPT is that too much reliance on this "tool" can result is less than optimal results. We want to look for a variety of media, used in conjuction with, rather than instead of PPT. Students find more variet interesting and enjoyable.

Hi Daniel:
PPT is a tool, just like your "tools of the trade". We want to choose the best tools for the job while instructing.

That said, I think using a variety of media choices, mixing it up, and moving frequently from one to the other, (or even simultaneously) is an effective approach to take.

Hi Rebecca:
PPT is a tool, and every tool has it's purpose and place. Too much or unnecary use of PPT (as a learning tool) is just as inaffective as any tool that's used for the wrong purpose.

But certaintly, PPT has a role and creative teachers can use it to effectively teach their students.

I love pp as well. It is a new and fun way to give information to your students.
