power point

Thanks for the website to help develop effective power point presentations.

Hi Joseph:

If using PPT, one general, all-purpose guideline to remember about using power-point is this – don’t read the slides to the students. Unless you’re deliberately trying to make a point, reading slides is the quickest way to have students tune out during the lesson.

Instead, it’s better to cover the main points on the slide, and have the students refer to the notes on their own.

Hi Jason:
Too much information can confuse students as to what is important. Lecturing and teaching using PPT is different than if giving a presentation to working persons who already know much about the topic. We can assist the student by keeping things brief and elaborating on the main points. Essentially, we're telling them what is inportnat.

no more than 5 points are good

I agree too much PP is not good teaching.

I think a lot of instructors rely on them too much. It hampers creativity within your teaching.

PP is a great tool when used properly. I have made mistakes such as putting too much information on a slide or reading from my slides which can be boring for students. A good balance of different methods of instruction keeps the students interested.

Sometimes PP can be used TOO MUCH as a part of instruction.
Although a good tool to use, some students do not learn well from PP.
Therefore, I try to "change up" my delivery methods in the classroom by doing hands-on, discussion, and small group activities as well.
