Is being silent the best form of disipline?

Hi Erica,
I like this method. I've heard instructors say this in the classroom when I was in college. I forgot about how effective it was. Thanks for the reminder. I will start using this method now myself.

Hi Dennis:

That's a good idea. Something else that might also work is speaking to students, one on one in a private setting to find out if there is anything going on to distract them from the class.

Hi Erica:
This technique is really effective and I know is used by seasoned teachers quite a bit. There is no intentional punitive implications, but students quickly realize that talking when the teacher is talking is not cool.

Slient is a good form of disipline. I will say to the class, "I'll just wait." The students that are listening remain quiet, while the other students conversations appear louder. Eventually they realize that the whole room is waiting for their conversation to stop. It only takes about a minute of my time, but it lets everyone re-set, and focis on the material at hand.

Dennis,
I do feel that silence definitely sends a signal to a class that they are not being respectful.
