classroom management

What do you do when all the students in your class seem to have an attitude about the class material before they will even give you the chance to change their mind about the material?

I discuss the syllabus with them and tell them that how this class is related to their course and how its going to help them in long run.

I teach a course that a lot of students find dull; they feel like it has little value. I talk to them on the first day of the course as I introduce the course material. I explain that other types of machines use similar technology. I do this in order to draw parallels and let the students know that the technology that I teach can be found in other areas, especially ones they may find more interesting. I let them know that they are free to ask questions about technical problems they might be encountering that sounds similar to the technology I teach. I stay upbeat rather than let them "drag me down" with their negativity. I become a salesman for my own course.
