Textbook PPT

A problem I have run into is the powerpoint prestentations provided by the students text book tend to be boring and include unnecessary information. I try to edit them and take out excess information, but have found this to be time consuming and labor intensive.

Hi Rebecca:
I teach course work to all aspects involving specialized applications pertaining to the Respiratory Therapist. I find customizing my PPT's to fit my lectures work the best. Strange as it sounds, I put a lot of time in making them brief. Then, I can amplify what was presented in the textbook and provide my own stories, work situations, case studies, and induce discussion. I use the textbook as a supplement to my lessons, not the substance of them. Therefore, I find limited use in textbook PPT slides.

The PPT's that are supplied with my textbooks are OK but tend to be more like summaries of the material in the book, which I presume the student can (and should have)read. Often, they are too plain and out of sequence with my lecture. I'm happier just doing my own slides and relying on the textbook to provide a foundation for instruction the student can do on their own.

Regards, Barry

May I ask what classes you teach? I find the PP from the textbooks to be very informative to the students.

I also find that the students can understand as they see how the author of the book is skillfully showing them how procedures are done.

Yet I have also seen that PPT can take over the class when teaching, especially if one stduent is not understanding the material thatis being discussed. Which falls under classroom management of PPT's.

Yes, I agree. I use them as an outline to cover the chapter and also edit out excess information. I also incorporate using the blackboard or using hands-on demonstrations with workplace products.
