Goals
The best way to set goals for career college students.
Roderick,
This is good. All of my instructors are "required" to put the daily lesson outline or objectives either on the white board or printed in a large font size on a sheet of paper in the front of the class. This helps everyone know what direction and topics will be covered. We always try to make every lesson touch on how that information is relative to their profession being trained for. This usually keeps the students interested and focused on paying attention.

I find that the best why to set goals for career college students to provide a list of objectives or skills in which you as the instructor will be covering in the class that you stress the most emphasis on and provide that list to the students. In addition to making sure that you refer back to the list to either show you have covered those objectives and ready to move on.
Talita,
Great idea! Wherever we are headed, we can't get there without a plan to reach that destination. Like planning a trip, we need to think about the steps that are necessary, realistic, and allow us to arrive with minimal difficulties.

When I first introduce students I ask what are your goals for this semester?. This is to obtain checklists and have them checked off. Next towards the end of the course this question returns. The reation of the student is off the charts. Most of the individuals realize working on these goals, help to organize oneself and utilize your time wisely. They also realize hard work will pay off. Then I put in the ballon poper. WHAT ARE YOUR NEW GOALS FOR THIS SEMESTER?. Little steps usually get you up that mountain!
Eduard,
Great. I think good teachers will leave an imprint of themselves if they put in the time, effort and planning needed to provide well organized classes that meet the course objectives as well as behavior that contributes to a better worker. Often, that kind of experience and learning is beyond textbooks and related resources, but resides solely in the instructional knowledge of the teacher.

I have always been thinking about small goals in teaching. Not for the entire career that my students prepare themselves. The class I teach will contribute to the well being of my students at work. I want them to understand to what extend they can use the skills and knowledge they got in my class after the graduation
James,
I refere to this principle as gradualism, but the idea is the same. Start with where you want to end up is one way to introduce a topic and in some segments of the instruction too.

Goals; A backward approach seem to work well. Let the students visualize their goals and then "map" the path or paths to complete thes goal. The visualization is very important.
Harold,
For me, a goal is a strategic measuring point, i.e., did we make it to the desired point? This varies with each class. Some classes take more time and resources, while other times, a class will catch on pretty quick.

To set goals that are in reach for all students that attened your class.
