Selecting Instructional Delivery Methods

Hi:

I find that I have to use a variety of different methods in the courses I teach. Because, I have a variety of learners in my classes I don't want to loose anyone. So, I try to encompass PP, Flip Charts, White Board and some movies that are appropriate for the course.

I find this captures just about everybody. it has been very successful.

I did learn something about PP I utilize the PP that comes with the books. It's helpful but, I find a bit MONDANE... I learned that I can kind of make it my own... and I will :) Thank you very helpful training... very helpful

Judy,
Discussion, although seemingly low key, can create great results in terms of student understanding, critical thinking skills, and has the ability to reinforce correct or incorrect thinking students may have. It also helps students interact, engage and participate, and as you say, may help validate points the student wants to share.

I felt as an Instructor for many years,it was wise to use many different methods of teaching.
I feel this is a way of holding everyone's attention. Also, along with power point, flip charts, lecture, etc. It's important to have open discussion...students should feel, what they have to say is very important!

Lisa,
Every kind of instructional course offers good instructors the opportunity to be creative. Some demand it, and yours may be one of those. Keeping things interesting would seem to be a good objective. Maybe bringing in someone you know who is willing to read from...whatever. Suppose they had a very thick accent. Or, if reading technical material, have them them read it fast. Or alternate between really slow with pauses, then really fast. The idea is to introduce variety (to keep things interesting) and alternative material (to make the activity pertinent), all to enhance the dictation speed and skill.

I am an instructor in a court reporter program, and I'm always trying to think of different ways to invovle the students or present information. The majority of our class is dictation and they are writing on their steno machines, so being creative in teaching them advanced theory or techniques, or just keeping them interested without getting discouraged can be tough because it is a challenging program to complete without a lot of hard work and dedication and "practice, practice, practice." I try to come up with interesting ways or exercises to practice dictiation material, TV, current events articles, as many different types of material for them to practice when at home.

Carmencita,
Yes, different learners are bound to connect with one of these methods. The ubiquitous PPT has its benefits, but I think it needs to be used cautiously, in proportion to the ability of students to get most of their information only from this media. I also agree that the PPT that often comes from puiblishers is limited, and quite un-dynamic.
