I feel it is very important to uses all of our senses in the learning process. Each of us learns differently. In the culinary field, sight and taste are primary factors in developing a dish that will ensure repeat customers. However, more recently, sound is playing an integral part in the menu development. The sound of fajitas sizzling as they cross a restaurant dining room perks up guests well before they actually see or smell the entry. Knowing how our senses react to certain stimuli can greatly enhance our marketing schemes in addition to our teaching environments.

Hi Earl:

Using the student’s senses during lesson plans is another great way of employing as many teaching methods as we can in hopes of addressing as many learning styles as we can. We understand that most students learn by a combination of these styles.

If we can use teaching methods that address these styles, we increase the chance of a student understanding and retaining the material.

I teach dental assistant program, we used the sense of smell and touching, student learn to recognized dental procedures being preform

In my algebra class, each week I put the students with a partner or small group to work out problems. This way they are not just working out the problems but they can explain to each other how to work the problems.

I teach in a Physical Therapist Assistant Program and using different senses are important. We are starting a new section this week about palpation. I am having the students use only touch to figure out what objects are before we start feeling what muscle, bones and ligament feel on each other. Sometimes you just have to take one of your senses out of the mix to help the others grow and develop.

Hi Roy:
To take that idea one step further - if we use a variety of teaching methods, we increase the chance of the student retaining the material exponentially.

I use powerpoints alot with with the "nuts and bolts" of the material i will be testing them on i find the student is more focused and is more engaged in the material.also i use colored slides and large font on inportant topics.

Hi Lyn:
Using a multitude of teaching methods (the senses, discussions, group work, etc.) is more likely to address the different learning styles you touch on in your statement. This is considered by most as a very effective teaching style.

Hi Lyn:
What we're really describing here is using as many techniques as possible to try to help our students gain a better understanding. This can be done by using the sense in learning, by trying new things, by having discussions, etc.

Regards, Barry

Hi George:
Truly, not every environment is conducive to trying other things. In general, when we use many different teaching methods, we are more sure to address as many learning styles as we can.

You can use different smells, textures, visuals and possibly tastes to teach class materials.

I teach in the Commercial Ref. Field. I am constantaly telling my students how important the sences are in diagnosing equipment. And in giving examples of such.

Hi Heather:
Similar to the method you describe here, another great way to support the idea of using senses and imagination in the learning environment is to liken whatever topic you are addressing to a real-world scenario as much as possible.
