Various instructional methods
I like to use powerpoints accompanied with a lecture outline with lines for note-taking. After a few slides I might perform a quick check by giving a pop quiz on the main points. This keeps students focused when they know there will be an assessment during instruction.
Tim,
Yes! Passion, enthusiasm, and a zest for the profession or topic at hand draws students into the discussion.

An instructor's delivery can add amazing color to the classroom. A bland experience soes not attract the students interest.
Frank,
I find long sessions of slide after PPT slide tend to lose their effectiveness. Adding variety along with PPT creates a multimedia learning experience that helps students retain information, and it's makes for a more interesting learning session too.

I like to use powerpoints to make a point and to highlight important issues which would heip them.
Carlos,
Great! I think any method, technique or resource that can benefit students is worthwile sharing it and hgelping them be better students as a result.

Depending on the class and what is available is what I use to make my presentation. Some textbooks will include PowerPoint Slide presentations. I would look them over and see how well they present the material. My other choice if not available is the use of MS OneNote. I ended up picking this one from a Computer Base Training that I purchased. The instructor's from the software company presented the material very well. Be a technology instructor found it very well and suitable in that it will help students gather and organize notes at the same time. The help part is being able to move or jump to any point base on the tabs for each page as well breaking thin up by chapter tabs in another view. In most case I deploy them to the students so that they do not need to do much writing so they become my handout.
Danny,
Yes, this is a version of multiple senses, and its a proven fact that more senses used results in better retention and longer term memory.

when going over important points/ facts in the class I like to use what I call the " hear it, say it, see it, write it" Scinario...... If I cAn get them to use all those processes with a particular point the likely hood that it will be remembered is greater if I had only used one of the processes
Jayne,
Variety, multiple media activities, along with creative instructional strategies will bring more interest and energy to the daily routine.

I also agree I like to use power points with class or slides haveing more modalities to learn from make learning intrest5ing to the students
Sheri,
I believe the best use of PPT slides is when they are used in conjunction with other instructional methods, such as using the white board, demonstraing a skill, handling a model or training aid, even dicussing a point being made. I use a slide advancer that along with a laser pointer has a "go to black" button that temporarily shuts off the PPT slide image. Then I can discuss or demonstrate, illustrate on the white borad or whatever, then go back to the presentation, It makes for a more seamless transition from activity to activity and more effective delivery of a lesson.

I also use powerpoints but only for main points, I use alot of lecture and sometimes while using a powerpoint I will also demonstrate a technique.
Fatemeh,
Good idea. I'm sure your students benefit from this simple acitivity that provides a continuous checking for understanding as you move through your lesson.
