Prepackaged power points.

What do you guys do when you receive pre-packaged power points presentations. I generally just get familiar with them and skip to the parts I can use, telling the students to use the rest as a resource.
What do you guys do?

Sharon,
For me, I rarely (if ever) use publisher supplied PPT slides. I will use the image library to supplement my own slides, but I don't always need or want to follow everything the way the text organizes and structures it. Also, publisher slides are usually not too engaging, kinda plain. I would rather just make my own slides, and organize the information that fits my topics best.

I review them carefully and try to find the information in the given textbook so I can refer to specific pages if needed. I make sure all links work. If I feel something should be changed, most pre-packaged PowerPoints will allow for editing, I will add, delete, or edit slides as needed to fit the course.

Nadine,
Yes, publisher supplied PPT slides can be a helpful aid. I tend to use the images, illustrations, graphs, charts and tables, information that would be difficult to replicate on my own. But each slide can also be customized, and I make my own just because my presentations usually don't follow the text and the slide information would be out of order. Also, I use bulleted points to guide discussion, rather than supplying all of the information on the slide.

Prepackaged PP are useful...Its much easi
er to pick and choose what's relevant at that time and for that particular group of students

Cynthia,
If what the publisher supplies is adequate then using slides that match the textbook is probably a good idea. I find these slides are typically not too dynamic and therefore, prefer to create my own. From the students perspective, I want to keep their interest and too many plain slides can contribute to a less than interesting class. Of course lively discussion, stories, and other acitivities that accompany the slides is usually an effective invironment for learning.

I generally use the prepackaged PPP as a guide. I interject past experience, current issues and question the students on their thoughts about the topics. They are generally a good basis on which to develop the discussions.

Christina,
Right. I've found the information provided by publisher-supplied PPT's are usually accurate but not very dynamic. And my sequencing is usually different from what the publisher has suggested. I'm like you, I prefer to create my own slides with the content, formatting, and images I choose to be benefificial for my classes.

I usually redo the powerpoint slides so that they are tailored to how I want to present the information to the class. I've found that the pre-packaged ones aren't as easy on the eyes and tend to have too much text per slide.

Sean,
Great. What makes your class special, is you! Your ideas, your thoughts, your expression. These characteristics could never be prewitten.

I have a similar method to Daniel. Im provided with prewritten material to present.

I try to supplement the provided material with my own in order to keep the content fresh and relative to the particular group of students I am instructing.

Daniel,
I am fortunate that I literally have access to more resouces than I could ever possibly use. So I am selective, taking a bit of and that to make a composite of the points I want to make in the order, fashion, methods I think work best.
