By asking students there opinion of the course, it can help to determine if any adjustments need to be made, it may be instructor delivery or the content of the curriculum.
I do the same thing not only is it a good ice breaker, it also gives you a chance to dispel any rumors the students heard. It also lets you know how students feel about your class in a open discussion.
Hi James:
As instructors, we all have something to offer as that is why our empokyers hired us. As long as we don't get old in our thinking we'll do okay.

Some of these candles were blown out by a light breeze a long time ago but, on occasion you have a bright light that's worth listening too.
Hi Frank:
Sounds like a graet ice breaker while giving you an opportunity to clarify expectations and offer encouragement.

On the first day of the course, I try to find out what the students have heard about the course. And what they expect to get out of this course. It just gives them a clear idea on what going to happen in the next couple of weeks.
Hi Nathan:
In some classes, Opinion could count for a lot, such as an English class or critical thinking class, or perhaps ethics or phiosophy. In trade school, there is likely to be less weight (if any) based on opinion.

Opinion, now there is something to think about. How much wait should we really apply to this.
Hi Bryan:
I suppose good useful information is desirable from whatever source it comes from. I would think at some point our students can contribute positively to the discussion or lesson.
Regards, Barry
sometimes the students opinion can really help others times you can`t use the info because they aren`t the brightest candle in the bunch
Hi Rob:
Good. Student feedback is always helpful - can be rough if students are not fair, don't take it seriously, or are carrying a grudge. But there is useful information even in these extremes that can be used by the instructor, even so.
