Career Succes

When we teach the Career Success training we always have extra time adn always bring up externship because thats where they seam to have most questions. What else can we do?

Hi Tonya:
These are great ideas. My school has done career fairs where we will invite a number of potential employers to the campus, and all students get an oppotunity to meet and greet, and generally network with potential empolyers. This usually specific to a program rather than the whole school.

For the whole school, career night, college night, informational workshops, and open houses are examples of methods to create a "work-seeker-friendly" environment.

Have people from the community come in and interview the students. At our college the employers love to come and interview/interact with our students. You can also have volunteer fairs on campus.

Hi Kerry:
Career success can include the elements that employers are looking for, other than the technical aspects of a job. These might include things like professionalism, attendanace and punctuality, hygiene and grooming, attitude, cooperation, communication - traits that can make for good or not so good employment experiences.

In each one, you could demonstrate or have students do activities to reinforce the results of some these, such as role playing, group discussion, practice interviews, etc.
