learning styles
I like to give little tests before the beginning of an instruction peroid to identfy the learning stype of the student. I will address all styles in my teaching plan. and the wide a veried style is effective for most learners.
Hi Magda:
To paraphrase your comments, these kinds of "pretests" can be a great way to help instructors create effective lesson plans.

Hi Kathleen:
The effective thing about the style your are describing is that it will undoubtedly address all types of learning styles, which is considered the best way to teach by most educational enthusiasts.

I also like to use learning style assessment tests because it is helpful for when I am teaching a student in a one-on-one situation, not only in the classroom setting. This information also helps with remediation. One other reason I like these tests is because it helps the students know what type of learning style they are more prone to find advantageous for themselves. It prevents them from feeling frustrated if they can't learn something as fast as a classmate because it may require a learning style that is not their strongest.
Hi Tammy:
Excellent - by using many different styles of teaching we address thedifferent methods of learning: visual, audio, and kinesthetic.

Hi Robbie:
These are excellent examples of using more than one technique to keep the student interest and morale up.
By using more than one approach, an instructor is more likely to teach to all types of learning styles.

Hi Billy:
It sounds like you are effectively hitting as many of the learning styles as you possibly can. These sound like very effective ways of getting your topic matter across to the student, regardless of the type of learner they are.
I've also heard of modulating the lecture tone of voice to break that "hypnosis" that can occurr sometimes.

Barry, I also use alot of different teaching styles. I draw/write on the smartboard, I am very vocal, animated and stress my points. I ask alot of different questions of students as I walk around the room.
Hi Ron:
Some pretesting can focus on learning styles, although I have found if I want that kind of informaton, I schedule a learning styles inventory (assessment) that zero's in on learning styles.
But if the content of the course and the students pre-knowledge is desired, it's probably better to use something that will reveal where the student is at so as to make small adjustments in the curriculum to better assist their learning.

I teach a course program and need to know from the begining of class what the retention level my students have from their last class. By this pretest method I can gauge where I start my new class.
Hi Marita:
It's probably true that each student has a slightly different learning style, or at least favors one style. At the same time I think all students are visual, auditory, or tactile learners to a general degree.
So by offering variety in the presentation, we have an opportunity to stimulate many senses and incorporate teaching stratefgies that touch on all the main learning styles.

I agree that variety is an important tool to use. By using a variety, I feel that you are more likely to reach students who learn differently. I like to use handouts, group or individual presentations, hands on lab work. I also write important points on the board during lecture.
I like to use a variety a teaching styles so that I can reach all of my students. I like to use PowerPoints, class discussions, group work, etc. Whenever I change it up, the class becomes more active and seems to retain the information a little better. It takes them out of their comfort zones and forces them to approach the class in an entirely new way.
Since i am teaching to different learning styles, i like to do outlines, internet to show procedures, use the board with illustrations, and put it together with hands on when students of in lab. By using visual things and hands on the students,it seems to help all the different styles of learner.
I like to teach to all 4 learning styles through out my whole course. When I do my presentation i call it, (lecture sounds to the students like something there parents do )I will present the material on power point projector, draw illustrations on the board, hand out parts that are part of the topic to pass around, some topics I have hand out sheets for, I try to get the students out of their seat to look at some thing in the room on the topic, I also have them draw some of the things that I put on the board to have for referance. when I speak I try to make sure and change my tones for differant topics to atract the attention. By doing these things my students are staying ingauged in there learning through out my course.
Hi Nancy:
Some teachers are able to do lerarning style assessment and incorporate that into selected lessons. Just trying to use a variety of leraning methods will also contribute to better student outcomes.
