Pretest.

How to find time to add a pretest?

Hi Richard:

One of the benefits of using pretests is they may help reveal what kind of learning style your student uses. Knowing this may help you create more effective lesson plans.

I give a "pre-quiz" the first day of class. I find that calling it a "test" causes instant anxiety. Especially on the first day. The quiz is made up of questions from classes they have already had. It's a good guage for me to see where they "are". I also have them write out their own personal goals for the class during the first week. I review them at the end of the quarter so the students can see if they set goals, they can meet them. And I recommend students do so with their other classes even if the instructor doesn't ask them to.

I always like to find time to have a pretest. Its usefull in gauaging where everyone is at or if certain points need more time than others.

Hi Daniel:
This sounds great! Also, these can serve to show you what kind of student learner you have, making lesson planning more effective.

Hi John:
Good point - sometimes it may not always be appropriate to use pretests.

But if you can incorporate them into your institution/learning environment, they may be a valuable method of determining what type of student learner you have.

That is a good idea to do pre and post testing. I have also done a reflection type assignment. Students will write down three things they want to learn, three things they thought they would learn, and three things they thought they would be didnt, and then three things they didnt know they would learn at the end. Then we do a reflection on the course. This helps me to tweek the course instruction from time to time.

Hi John:
Great. I'll pretest every now and then. It's only when I'm not sure at level my students are at.

Sometimes, I'll do a short pretest at the beginning of class, then give the same test at the end of the term - just to demostrate how far they've come in their learning.

I give a pre- test the first day of class. It can be overwhelming but I reausre the students that this is not graded
