variety of content
having more than one method of teaching one part of a subject can be good back up and cover a number of student learning abilities.
Hi Jen:
The idea here is that most feel it is effective to use a variety of teaching styles in all classes as a way to facilitate every type of learning style.

Hi Stephanie:
As a general rule of thumb, it's a good idea to use a variety of instructional techniques to address every type of learning style.
By having visual, audio, and kinesthetic activities, we are sure to do this.

Hi John:
Most instructors would probably agree with you there.
For example, we need to try to have variety to address visual, audio, and kinesthetic types of learners. Having only one style may be less effective.

It is a good plan, but often takes a lot of time to figure out an effective way to execute.
Hi Heidi-Jo:
Variety makes classes more interesting and enjoyable, as well as adding enough stabilkity to anchor the class to meet the course objectives. If PPT is used, add white board; if writing assignment, use flip charts to summarize student points; whatever the media, mixing it up and engaging students makes for meaningful and interesting classes.

I am a new instructor but I know from my own educational experience that it is necessary to evaluate student reactions and change delivery methods if something is not working.
I have found having more than one method of teaching in class keeps the students interest longer and in the long run is more effective.
Hi Karin:
Variety is truely impportant. More variety "requires and inspires" the mental faculties most students already possess, so our challenge is to choose the most meaningful collection of media that will facilitate learning by student involvement.
If we could have the student teach the class, they's learn more than an instructor telling information. It's like passive vs active learning. Creating that active environment also makes learning more enjoyable and interesting.

I create lessons that can utilize every learning style each class session. I incorporate visual, auditory, hands-on, perceptual and critical thinking activites to keep the students engaged and learning from myself and each other as much as I can. While the methods only change periodically, the content changes daily. The students look forward to what the next class sesion of activities will be. As a general education instructor, I feel this is critical to get them excited in a noncore technical course.
Hi Jeffrey:
Good points. Even variety for all level of learners makes for a more interesting and enjoyable class. Variety keeps attention, focus, and students retain more needed material.

Courses may be used for a wide variety of students at different learning levels. Therefore, the content approach or material may need to be modified to fit the students level of understanding, while keep the a desired outcome for the class/course.
