study buddies and study teams seem to help the students understanding and helps create community. I agree that sometimes the student won't utilize tutoring because they don't want a faculty member to think they are "stupid".

I am currently a student myself and find comparing my math answers to the student next to me, very helpful.

and of course we all know that the best way to learn something is to teach it.

My class has done very well using study groups for review before tests and quizzes. I find that they sometimes learn from taking pointers from fellow students and all learning styles can be engaged in the discussion.

Hi Christopher:
Good study groups (the outside of class kind) are ones that involve only 3-4 students, with set time limits and specific goals and lesson material to review.

Anymore than four gets to be more of a social thing, encourage non-productive talking, diminishes the role of each one participating in the discussion, and can end up with a relatively large block of time wasted.

Hi Ashia:
I think peer mentoring or matching stronger with weaker student is a great techniques and is usually effective. Rarely, there may be personality clashes, but just reshuffling the match-ups usually takes care of that.

Study groups are always a bouns and very helpfull. its the only way i made it threw school

Hi Linda:
Student learning or peer mentoring is great. Students relate easier to one another than to teacher sometimes, and theres a comfort zone they can achieve if they learn to trust one another.

Regards, Barry

I agree. I think students find comfort in other students when learning.

I agree, study buddies can usually pull on each others strengths to help each other out

study buddies are helpful for the students.they can relate to each other and feel comfortable dissuing class assignments

Study groups allow the student to view different aspects of a topic, especially a difficult subject. At times, peers are the best teachers.

This method is effective if you are able to assure the better student isn't doing the majority of the work instead as assisting the struggling student.

Great idea. I also paired up a hispanic student who had a bit of a language barrier with a willing student who could help her out during lecture if she did not understand something.

Study-buddies are often less intimidating to a struggling student than an instructor. The successful student still can relate to the struggling student regarding learning issues and can share ideas that helped them be successful. Students also are more willing to share personal information with each other and this can be useful in giving examples.

I have used this approach many times. Asnd it is quite effective
