instructional techniques

Are some more effective than others?

Hi Michael:
We do have to exercise sensitivity to students who may not learn well in specific learning activities (like group work). On the other hand, a student may gain an even stronger understanding of a topic from a classmate just because the classmate is describing the concept in a different way.

Hi Joyce:
One thing to consider is the idea that using a variety of teaching techniques may be the best way to make sure we address every type of learning style.

I believe that effectiveness varies with student learning styles. I prefer to have students work on various activities in small groups; however, I've learned that some students actually prefer listening to lectures (brief ones) and are uncomfortable in any kind of groups. So it makes sense, in my opinion, to present a variety of techniques in each class meeting.

absolutely, especially in writing when they can critique a sample essay.
