Students Learning Styles

Student have different learning styles. I use all styles in my class. I have the students read the chapter and write 10 questions from the chapter. I lecture on the most unanswered questions and then I have the class do activities on them. My powerpoint slides have responses during the slide and sometimes I have the students write down their questions and wait until after the slide to see how much they can retain.

Hi Laurie:

One idea when selecting course material and media is to try employ as many teaching styles as we can in order to address as many learning styles as possible. Selecting material and presenting it in a visual, audio, and kinesthetic way is generally considered the most efficient method of delivery.

Hi Kathryn:

One general, all-purpose guideline to remember about using power-point is this – don’t read the slides to the students. Unless you’re deliberately trying to make a point, reading slides is the quickest way to have students tune out during the lesson.

Instead, it’s better to cover the main points on the slide, and have the students refer to the notes on their own.

Hi Laura:

If we can to employ as many teaching styles as we can, we will be sure to address as many learning styles as possible.

Hi Michael:

If we can employ as many teaching styles as we can, we are more likely to address as many learning styles as possible. Selecting material and presenting it in a visual, audio, and kinesthetic way is considered the most efficient method of delivery.

Hi Heather:
One thing instructor's might keep in mind is the need to address as many learning styles as possible. Therefore, it makes sense to use as MANY teaching methods as we can to be sure to address as many learning styles as possible.

Hi Sor:
In general, most consider the best approach is to utilize as many teaching styles as possible so we are more likely to address as many learning styles in the process.

Hi Amy:
Absolutely, in fact most would agree that we all learn best by getting up and doing new things. However, this approach is not always practical for every learning situation.

Hi Jerry:
True, incorporating as many styles is considered the most effective way of teaching because it allows the majority of students a better chance at successfully incorporating new information into their long-term memories.

Hi Christina:
One thing that's great about having students work in groups is that "weaker" students may learn from their colleagues just be hearing the information from a different perspective.

Hi Todd:
The nice thing about group work is that "weaker" students may get a fresh perspective about a topic just because it is being described in a different way by one of their classmates.

Hi Patricia:
The nice thing about using several teaching styles is it makes it more likely you will have effectively reached as many students as possible, especially those that learn best from a combination of learning styles (like most of us).

Hi Chris:
One of the things group work is great for is that it might help a "weaker" student get a fresh perspective from one of their classmates.

This may help them understand a topic just by hearing about it a different way.

Hi Vanessa:
Excellent! For any instructor, using aa variety of methods is the most likely way to help students retain as much information as they can specifically because we are teaching in a way that makes the most sense for them.

When I teach my courses, I always try and put myself in the role of the student if I was taking my class. This is how I incorporate all of the learning styles into my teaching.

I agree. Student learning styles have many variations. There is no perfect learning style, every style is an adaptation. They vary from student to student, from day to day and minute to minute. It is critically important to check for understanding to see if you are actually being effective in the classroom. Al Sharon

I try to place the students in relevant leadership roles and let the in class topic impact them.

They seem to like being leaders and rise to the occasion the best they can but it at least gets them to focus on the particular topic and realize why participation is vital to the learning process.

I agree. I tried using PowerPoint on the first day of one of my classes and found the students to be disengaged and bored. I quickly rerouted by separating them into groups and facilitating group activities.

I try to use all different learning styles in my presentations in class. But there is one learning style that I always use in classes. I have the students work together to answer or solve problems regarding the chapter for that day. I have found that they end up teaching each other and it increases their learning on the subject matter. I seem to get more discussion out of students and retention is greater with the students as well. And they seem to ask a lot of questions when I have them work together.
