Pretests
I think pretests are an excellent idea because it lets you know if the student has any knowledge on the subject that you are going to be teaching.

I would love to pretest my students, or raise entrance requirements in the areas of professional experience, although I fear a pretest would embarass some students who have zero experience.
pretests allow the instructor to know a good starting point. If the pretest shows that the students are at a higher level than the instuctor can meet the students educational needs
