engaging students who have lost interest.

There will always be times when students lose interest in a particular class or subject. I like to give them a break, make a joke, utilize a different activity, take them outside for an activity, do something hands on or use a guest speaker. Depending on the subject at the time, such as the Nervous System-that is a very intense chapter to cover...I will teach a section and then show a short video or have them stand and do a physical activity. No matter how difficult the subject, I like to incorporate an activity to give the students a break.

Hi Lisa:

One technique that may also work well is to have the instructor walk around while lecturing, bringing a closer physical proximity to the student.
This is not always a practical solution, and may not work for certain course work.

By always observing the students, one is able to to determine as to whether it is time to engage the student on a different level for example ad libbing or switching to role playing, having the students actively engaging in the delivery process. I usually find this especially helpfull particularly after lunch break when the student returns to the class and would prefer to nap rather than learn.

I agree in mixing up the teaching presentations. Letting the students get out of their chairs to get a hands on or to experience what a patient might have to go through, gives them insight and makes them more empathetic. Presenting information on different media and getting them involved also increases buy-in and knowledge.

I agree. I try to play a game after a tedious lecture and it usually livens things up.

Changing up the classroom with different types of learning helps keep students focused. For example, games help reinforce learning, but in a fun way.

Not only using guest speakers or taking them on a field trip have hands on activities as a back up plan to introduce new topics. Fun games, computer simulation labs are also fun for the students to interact with. Present students with great discussion questions and let them lead the class. Students like to be involved. Students also like to be put in charge. Let them help you design a lesson.

I have found that once and awhile when students loose interest in a subject that even just taking a short break can help. Maybe let them get a quick drink of water or stretch their legs can help bring them back to the subject. Also if this doesn't seem to work I like to bring in stories from my experience in the clinic. Students tend to love to hear how what you are teaching them applies to the real world.

I would try to engage this student differently, because what I'm doing presently isn't working. Maybe group work, or maybe do a little Power Point presentation, mix it up a bit. Maybe the students need to get outside and have a walk in the park and share. The same monotony in class might not work for everyone.

change up the classroom, your presentation, have a guest speaker. If you have a safe place to sit go outside.

Field trips are a great way to help those that seem to have lost interest. Some are just bored and need different stimulation to get them back on track.

When a student loses interst you can have field trips and guest speakers to break up the classroom. You can also break out in groups to discuss content of the lessons.
