Pretsting also allows the student to understand that they may not know as much about the subject as they think that they do. This may help with participation from those students who are looking at school as "a way to get certified faster because I already know it all"

I like using pretests. It identifies problem areas and gives the students practice at test taking. However, I have given a pretest on a specific subject where the students did pretty good but then saw their grades decrease on the formal test.
