pretest
Pretest would give a better gauge of where students stand in view of the material to be presented.
Nanette,
Post tests can also tell how much students retained. For me, a good pretest helps me plan my class lessons more specific to the group of students I currently have.

A pre test allows the instructor to re-evaluate there style and techniques. The rsults show the instructor if the students are able to grasp all the information that was presented to them.
April,
Good. The thing about pretesting is it provides information to the instructor for planning purposes. You've descrived another alternative for the use of results that would not have have been available had the results of pretesting not been available. For instance, I've had different instructors teaching the same class all do pretesting and then, examine what tweaks that each made to make their class stronger. Once the testing is completed, there are many uses for the instructor to use.

I would have to agree with Michele, the thing is that once the pre-test has been evaluated the instructor can still use the option of grouping students from the results as to assist each other in the learning process. By taking a student who did well and a student who did not do the best. Together they are able to help strengthen the learning process
