Pretests

Gauging where a student's ability is in a given subject matter is harding than you think due to the student's inaccurate self-evaluation. I find it easier to Pop Quiz them in which some count towards their grade and some do not. They never know which ones count though.

Harold,
I use the pretest almost solely based on the information I have on what prior knowledge my students have about the subject matter. How much (or little) emphasis will be needed in a given subject or component.

pretests are a good way to judge were each student is at that part of the phase.

Hello Robert and others in our learning team,
I have used the pre-test process to know where to begin with my new students. Pre-tests need to be carefully constructed to gauge deficiencies. When using a pre-test, a downside can be the somewhat demoralizing effect of exposing students to the equivalent of a "final exam."
The information gained has been beneficial. We are required to teach a very standardized content, but delivery options belong to the instructor.
