BY GIVING A PRETEST YOU ARE ABLE TO SEE WHAT EACH STUDENT KNOWS.THIS HELPS YOU TO PREPARE YOU LESSONS TO HELP EACH STUDENT.

Hi Bryon:
Right. Making adjustments for time sake or students sake is one great benefit to pretesting.

Also, beginning class to final class comparisons can be quite helpful, and convey information about my teaching effectiveness.

Regards, Barry

The pretest can really help gauge how the course will be taught. I use them to help me prpare content and what areas I may need to spend more time on and what areas they may alread have a good handle on.

Hi Caren:
ood. Pretesting also allows you you make samll (or larger) adjustments in the curriculum in order to meet the needs of bulk of your students.

Comparing performance on beginning day to final day can be quite enlightening as well.

Hi Diego:
Good - comparison from beginning class to final class is a very helpful analysis for teachers.

Hi David:
This pretesting can be a graet use for the teacer - assiting making small adjustments, or modifying the curriculum to better match the current cohort of students.

Hi Christopher:
I think these pretests help the teacher more that the students. As you say, we can learn what performance or skill level our students are at. But we can also lern to make adjustments or decide to emphasize certain topics more (than in previous classes) based on the results of the testing. This can be a tremendoudous help to a busy teacher on a tight schedule.

Hi Kimberly:
Good reasons. Also, you can make beginning to final learning comparisons. I've used testing to assess different teachers teaching the same material and then rating how similar the students tested (the formal name for this is inter-rater reliabilty). In other words if 5 teachers taught the same material how similar would they grade?

Anyway, this is a great tool and more teachers would probably benefit if they used it.

Hi John:
Great ideas on staging learning based on learning levels or skill mastery.

Hi Jaclyn:
Many more teachers would use pretesting if they felt a you do, and I agree, it is an extremely helpful tool that's not widely used by ll teachers. Even if it is only used to compare beginning vs final learning, that's a great bit of information to have, both for the student and the teacher!

Hi David:
Right! Tailoring orcustomizing to put the emphasis where it will do the most good.

Regards, Barry

Hi Carlos:
Great use of the pretest. For me it seems every class is a bit different so my pretesting shows me where more (or less) emphasis may be needed on a given topic.

Pretesting can help you see what skills the students have acquired and what areas they are deficient in. That way I can plan accordingly to help them meet my goals for the course.

Having a base line helps you to assess better the student’s progress, and to adjust your teaching methodologies.

Pretests should be given all the time so you know exactly where the student stand or knowledge about the up and coming course.

Getting a baseline for students knowledge can help you prepare from the beginning, middle, or near the end of a class. You need to know what students' strengths are in terms of spelling, grammar, history, interest, passions, etc...various pretests may help you get an insight into how you may approach teaching the course and how much pressure you may put on them in terms of course load.

A pretest can assist you in learning your class. It can assist you in tailoring the delivery of your lessons and give you an opportunity to make adjustments.

A pretset lets you know the amount of knowledge a student may have about a certain subject. Witch allows you to know your students and what they are capable of. With this information you can then adjust your class for better learning to take place. For example when we administer a pretest in the beginners class it is based on equivelents. The students are here to become chefs. So the ability for them to be able to convert ingredients or recipies is paramount. You may then adjust your class by fitting in appropriate exercises to help the students practice this information. We also want the students to see what they do know or what they need to work on to succeed. We will correct the tests together with the students so that it is more of an eye opener to them.

I feel that pre-testing can help in numorous ways when teaching. It can first of all help you to evaluate as an instructor where your students ability level currently stands. It can also help you to evaluate what materials you have to revisit and what you can move on with. Pretesting can also aid in helping you to figure out what teaching methods you need to use. I am a huge fan of pre-testing and feel that it is a useful tool for instrutors to adopt.

If the students take a pretest, you can gauge their existing skill set or knowledge base. This will enable you to tailor the flow of the class to their requirements.
