I also like the war stories, but but we must be careful in their use. I teach in a nursing program and must make sure I assure basic information is tranferred, that the students have done their reading as well. There is no possible way I can go over all the reading they are assigned. I usually go over a case scenario. Ask questions to create critical thinking skills in my student, and at the end I can share a war story from my own experience or that of a co worker. These stories are the ones which students often remember many years later. I remeber them from my instructors, and they woke me up and grabbed my attention some 30 years later!

If you are noticing that students are off task then breaking the class into small groups will offer them the continued learning neccessary and re engage the class.
Hi Tom:
One technique that may also work well is to have the instructor walk around while lecturing, bringing a closer physical proximity to the student.
This is not always a practical solution, and may not work for certain course work.

Sometimes it may be as simple as taking a 5 or 10 minute break so the students can get up and move and refocus. Also I find if I move about the class and stand next to the student they seem to "wake" themselves up a little. I will also pause lecture and will ask the class a question, and request the answer be written on the board. There are so many things we can do to adjust the focus and get back to the information we need to get through that day.
When students are no longer focused it is the job of the teacher to get them back in focus. I try to get to know my class, intrests and majors, as well as I can so that I can find something that they can relate to. Once I do this I can use to to refocus them as I work what we are talking about in class into their own lives. It goes back to the motivation that I learned in my methodology classes when I studied to become a teacher, students need to see the practicality of the learning in order to stay engaged.
Take a moment and explain how what you are reviewing that day.. will play out in the workplace. If they can visualize something happening in their career then they have made a different memory attachment of it.
Enocuraging the off-task student to respond to a sceniro situation reengage the student to the current topic of discussion.

It works on the K-12 level and the college level equally well.
I too use this approach, it has always served me well. I do find it difficult when I have motivated and non motivated student in the same class.
