Using pretests as a tool

A pretest would be a way to evaluate the
preparation level of the students. If you
do give pretests and have each student
sign their name be sure you inform the
students of the confidentiality of the
in formation.

Timothy,
"Previews of coming attractions". Don't these always catch our attention when a new movie is being promoted? Same with a pretest. It can give the students a peek into what lies ahead, and may provide a sense of curisoity and interest in learning more about the various topics. When I use a pretest, I try to guage where emphasis is (or is not) needed. So it helps me plan whats best for these students at this time in this class - which may vary from the previous or future classes.

Pre-tests help to determine students understanding of the subject, and gives the instructor information to help the student in their learning needs

Hi J,
Good point. For me, I always create a sample test that will only be used for pretesting, so there would never be an occasion for the students to share the information. Each one is slightly different. In one sense, even if information was shared with another class, that would only help prepare them of "coming attractions".
