Utilizing Resources

I find that my students are more inclined to remain engaged if i break up the lessons in blocks of 1 hour. Each hour we do something different such as a lecture, then we might play a trivia game or break up into groups and give each group a timed challenge to see what they have learned. I also really helps to keep the students motivated.

Tracy,
Balancing the class time between activities such as you've described is a great way to keep attention, involve students in the activity, and break the time into meaningful segments.

We use the first 2 hours as lecture and the second two hours as lab. Sometimes when I notice the weeks unit has alot of lecture I will switch it up and do 1hour lecture 1hour labs and then do it again. I find that this way my students don't start to fall asleep or there minds will wonder.

Heather,
Sitting for more than about 30 minutes requires some mental activity to keep students focused. Variety in media resources with combinations of alternating delivery methods helps keep students focused.
