re:pre testing
any advice on how to prepare for this?
Zack,
If time allows, pretesting can be a big help to the intructor's planning.

Pre-testing is a must in to see what a student knows about the subject at hand. It allows for u the instructor to work with each student individual on things they need to work on.
Thansk for posting this, Nicole. I enjoyed reading the response you got on this. Pre-testing is something I have never done, but after reading about it here, I just may start!
Bonnie,
I agree. And I think too often there is an assumption that students know this or that, are following the instructor's lecture, are understanding the point being made. I try to "check for understnding" frequently throughout the lesson (asking questions, reveiwing, illustrating, etc.). This helps be go just so far before I make sure most are tracking with me.

We should never assume that students undertand where we are coming from. Testing and games such as Jeopardy helps me to see where they are individually.

Nicole,
One way is to take the course learning objectives and select sample questions that would demonstrate a student knows enough about that topic to answer the questions correctly. When the whole class collectively correctly answers certain questions, that may help the instructor decide that less emphasis may be needed in that topic. It may also show that information the instructor assumed everyone would already know, may not know, and therefore more emphasis than originally planned for would be indicated.
