Hi Sandy:
Wonderful! These are great examples of engagement and variety to enhance the learning process.

Hi Cynthia:
Good ideas. We want to make sure we can maximse the time available to teach, and that may involve egagement in activities other than lecture. Great opportunity for alternative learning strategies.

Hi Lori:
For me, something that is relevant, low tech, and interesting that can be implemmented with little to no planning is one type of back-up plan for those days when equipment is absent/not working; resources needed are not available, etc. Striving to avoid wasting the students time takes some planning.

Hi Mike:
Using real-world examples is a great way to bring fresh enthusiasm into a class environment. It may also promote new questions and be a bridge to discussion.

Hi Gwen:
It sounds like you use a lot of different techniques, a great idea for addressing as many learning styles as we can.
One idea to consider: why not use back-up activities no matter what, just as a way to break up the atmosphere?
Regards, Barry
Hi Denise:
Great! What I see as extremely beneficial is you engage the students, get them thinking, and use practical examples they'll see in the profession to complement your lecture and related lesson material. Discussion makes learning more interesting too.

Nursing lectures can be very tedious so in lieu of lecture I will create scenarios that include the lecture content. I utilize an open forum whereby the students can brain storm and apply what they know to the current situation. We then evaluate the outcomes and determine if the responses were correct or incorrect and if the action was not appropriate we then talk about what the better approach would have been.
I think you always have to have a back up plan in mind. I recommend group activities, ice breaker poll questions and Jeopardy to review. You want the students to be discussing things instead of simply sitting there listening to you the whole time!!
Hi Paul:
Group activity works well to asset the overall group understanding, enhances participation, and engages students making the class a bit more interesting.

I really like to get into groups and have a group activity. It takes time away from the mundane and works well with most types of learners.
Hi Latasha:
Good preparation takes time and effort. When we try to teach not fully prepared, students will notice, may lose interest, or even feel the teacher doesn't care about their learning.

Hi Sara:
Choice is cool. Also, the more variety we can add the more interesting the class will be and the likely student retention will improve.

Hi Faith:
Class participation this way is great for stimulating discussion, expressing true opinions (without the guilt or fear of being honest), and assessing understanding in an ongoing delivery format. I think we'll begin to see more of this kind of technology in the classroom as time passes.

Games that are educational as well as fun are good to get the class involved in the lesson plan. I also like to have a backup list of questions that have a broad answer range to try and get responses from more than just one student. It makes them all think of what they each have to say and maybe even add to what another student had answered.
I have divided the students into random groups, using playing cards; and then had each group draw the game or activity that their group will complete. The activities could include problem solving, creating puzzles on the computer, playing a vocabulary game of Hangman or a game of Win, Lose, or Draw.
Making sure im well organized. having not only my lecture ready but also have a powerpoint, and other class activities.
I use games and review questions. I keeps my studetns intrest in the subject. I also use blank diagrams of body systems and colors so students interest remain for the hour. I'm always prepared with a back up plan for all lectures.
I have fun activities for a back up plan such as games. I also give them a choice of what treatments they would like to give and recieve. I think the student like to have a choice.
I participated in a class that used anonymous computer comments & voting that was projected on a screen - this allowed the instructor to see any questions students had, or to follow along with requests for more information. Everyone got instant feedback and updates in class. Hope to use this option one day myself.
Hi Alice-Marie:
Good. I think good back-up plans can serve different purposes like filling time when there's extra time near the end of class, or when what was planned cannot happen for whatever reason. A good backup plan can be put into place with short notice, is low tech, and is applicable to the current topic.
