A pretest at the beginning of every new class will help the instructor learn what some of the weaknesses of the students; which provides an opportunity to gauge the lecture accordingly. Career college students come to the program with different backgrounds and aptitudes. Knowing the average ability of the students would be very instrumental in the instructional planning. A Pretest can also be used to assess the students’ capability to successfully complete the program.

It can help you gauge where your students stand as far as the material covered in the class

Hello,
I have never used a pretest before, but I like the idea because pretests can be useful in finding the knowledge level the class in on which directly help me as the instructor to plan where to start the course as well as how fast to cover the material and what sections of the text should be focused more on. I will be giving a couple of my classes a pretest next semester so I am better able to plan what, and in what depth, I am going to cover.

This would be very assistive in determining level of knowledge already held by students.

Pretesting the students can be helpful to see what they know. For multiple terms with the same students, I normally give a pretest on the first day of new term and use it as an assessment of what was retained with some new material to see where they are at. It is a good tool.

Pertest can help the(Instructor)students pay more attention due to the fact that you give the students a test as they enter the class for the first day and when you pop a test on them on the first day and a get majority ofthe questions wrong that humbbles the student and gets them to pat attention during the the rest of the course.

sounds like a good idea, I may just give it a shot. Thank you for sharing it.

I do have a good pretest ,on day one of class after I spend time going over course content and have a feel for the class I may have students do the pretest to find how they stand.

It gives a basic understanding of what knowledge students already possess as well as their strengths and weaknesses.

I think it helps the students gather insight on the instruction.

This is an excellent tool. Adult students come from a variety of background and experience. Not only does it help with developing course content, the students can share their experience with one another in class.

Since I teach a writing course, I find a great need to pretest students on grammar and sentence structure.

I believe this pretest helps me in determining when to assign them papers to write. Even though, much of what we go over at the beginning of the course may have been covered in upper level high school, much of this needs to be reviewed. This is especially true for students who have been out of school for a long time.

In the long run, pretests save time. There really is no need for students to begin writing papers and for me, as an instructor, to begin grading, until students know how to write sentences. The first week or so can be developed towards helping students prepare for writing a paper by giving pretests and understanding what writing basics that students must learn first.

I have never done this, but in reading the information in the module I can see how this could benefit and change the instructors first impression of the student body.
Gathering information on how a student learns or what needs they may have will also result in future lesson plans to focus on the areas that need the most attention to help the students succeed.

A pretest can let you know what areas your students are stong in and what areas need to be develped more. If you have a class that needs to know terms and only 15% of the class knows the corret terms you are going to have a adjust your classes to make sure you cover all the terms that the students need to know. You can also give assignments to cover some of the terms that you feel they should already have a good knowledge of. It also lets you know if a certain part of the class does not need to be as in depth as you originally thought.

I have used a combination of pretest and survey to gauge the class as a whole.

using pretest is good planning tool. we can assese the level of students knowledge.According to the assesement we can prepare the lesson plan. if needed we can recomend the students for extra tutoring.

Pretests are a very important planning tools in many ways. You can determined what information students may have already acquired. This can allow for the information acquired to be minimized and unknown areas of the lesson to be expanded upon. When paired with a post test, it allows you to see what students have learned from the lesson and what areas are important to change or readdress.

Pretesting helps an instructor to know who their patients are, what they know, and their potential. It helps an instructor plan their lessons accordingly and also lets them know if there are any special circumstances that they need to address in their class.

A pretest is a fantastic way to get to the knowledge level you have in the class. Once this information is gained then you can proceed with each of the lesson plans that you have created. I usually have to go to lesson plan D.

I teach at culinary school, instead of pretests I think there should be a requirement that the student get experience in the industry before they begin. Not only will they learn some basic skills they will also get a feel for the career that they will be stepping into.
