One way to get my students to read periodicals on a recurring basis is to pick an article every two weeks thats relevant to the subject thats been taught. I take 30 mins to discuss the article with the class. This way students become accustomed at looking thru new material on a regular basis.
Does anybody do something like this? I would like to change the format a bit.
PS: Im not the only one that selects the article, I have students selct articles as well.
We called this current events (not older than 3mo)pertaining to the class schedule of topics. The student can research and they present- they are the expert in the field. Each student must remark or have a relevant question that pertains to the article. A great way to begin or end a class.

This is an effective method. I have used a similar method, however I allow the students find articles that are shared with peers on a topical basis. They recommend the articles to their peers and discuss via the discussion board (the "host" student creates the discussion thread for their article). I approve the article (to ensure that it connects with the topic) and assist in creating the discussion question. Students seem to enjoy the sense of ownership.
